I'm an active member and volunteer with Braver Angels, an organization with a mission to help people with diametrically opposed political views find common ground and learn to communicate better with one another.
I just went through their "Online Skills for Social Media" training and found it very useful. It focuses on empathic listening, finding common ground and having a healthy conversation, especially when you disagree with someone.
The lessons can easily carry over to everyday conversations in text, emails, or even in-person.
I would highly recommend you check it out. It may save you a lot of headache and, who knows, may even lead to some wildly interesting and productive conversations about politics online and in-person with people you disagree with!
Enjoy!
