Santiago Peak Calling…Our Readers!

Climbing Mount Whitney You may recall from the First Long Hike Complete post that a friend and I hiked up to the highest point in Orange County, Santiago Peak, in November of 2011 . The post created quite a number of comments via email, a few on the post’s Comments section, and a number on Facebook. One particular reader was inspired to hike up to the peak and asked some clarifying questions. I figured there may be others who may be considering the hike and have similar questions. So, here they are with the answers: Q : How much water did you need (not counting water for the dog)? Just a 3L bladder? A : I took two 3L bladders. A common recommendation I've seen is .7L per hour. We figured we would be gone for 7.5 hours, equating to about 5.5L. That's why I took what I did. However, the weather was very cool that day (at warmest, it was 57°F). First Long Hike Complete

Climbing Mount Whitney That’s right! Christopher T. and I hiked to the top of Santiago Peak, the highest mountain in Orange County at 5,687 ft. on November 19, 2011. This was the first of three big hikes before Mount Whitney in the Summer of 2012. What follows is a retelling of our day, some of our challenges, and some very intriguing discoveries and folks we met on the trail. Packing Knowing that we’d have an early start in the morning, I packed the car with all of the equipment and necessities the night before. That wasn’t a small task. I had the usual material based on the Equipment Check we’d already created. I excluded a few items though. Blinded

Though I despise religious institutions and the audacity of religions claiming they have the last word on all moral standings, seeing how it leads to hate among humankind of different faiths, I admit that much good also comes out of them. The good is often used as a means to proselytize, but it’s still a good when a person is given shelter, food, water, education and hope. My reaction to Rumi when I was young was based on the reverence of my father reading Rumi's poems in Farsi to me. How he cherished the wisdom in those words translated to me wanting to read and listen more. I didn’t understand much of the verses, but I read them anyway. Most of the time though, it was my dad who’d read and explain them to me. I loved those sessions of learning and intimacy with him. I’ve avoided reading Rumi for most of my adult life, given he was the father of Sufism in Iran. That religious tie and start poisoned the well of his wisdom for me.
